What is the best time of year to service/ replace the Air Conditioner and should I do it every year?

March-May is the best time to get your air conditioner serviced in the greater Sacramento area. Basically when it’s above 70 degrees inside and outside your home. And as far as how often you should do it I recommend doing the basic maintenance yourself like air filters, cleaning off the coil, and basic performance check. Check the link below for more details. As far as how often I recommend having a professional out, I would recommend once every four years or when you notice a problem. The main problem I see people having to check is for symptoms of a unit leaking refrigerant during the time you’re not running the a/c. I get so many calls when it's 100+ in June and the A/C has lost all or most of its refrigerant.

If a system is over 10 years old and has an unmanageable refrigerant leak this is one of the most common reasons for system replacement and if you first notice this in June you’re likely to have to wait at least a few days or longer to resolve this type of issue. So better to deal with it in the springtime. March-May is by far the slowest time of year in the industry when the weather in California is perfect. In spring If you called up 10 different HVAC companies to give you a bid for a new system most could come the same or next day. You’ll be able to get the most competitive price and it wouldn't surprise me if you end up saving 20% vs replacing the system in the heat of the summer. Since it's so miserable working when it's over 100 outside vs on a 70 degree day you should get a better quality job too.
