The first being a basic digital programmable thermostat. It's simple and easy to use, and maybe a basic thermostat is all you need. On the other hand, if you're a smart phone user you may feel more at home with a smart thermostat. Smart thermostats offer more functionality, which can result in extra comfort and save you money on your utility bills.

Replacing your thermostat can be a great do-it-yourself project. The most common smart thermostats I see are the Eco Bee and the Nest. I personally use the Nest and can recommend it to anyone who uses a smart phone. The main problem I've came across when installing a smart thermostat is that many of them require a common wire which usually isn't used in the old thermostat. Be careful when attempting to replace the thermostat yourself. If the wires are connected wrong its easy to cause a short that can cause damage to the electronics in your system or to the new thermostat.
