It's Not Because It's Hot: Why Your AC Fails on the Hottest Days.

When the temperature spikes in Sacramento, your air conditioner works harder than ever. But here's the thing—it's not the heat itself that kills your system. It's how the heat exposes three hidden problems that were already lurking. First, Dirty Condenser Coils. Problem: Your outdoor coil is caked with dirt, pollen, and debris. On a 100-degree day, this makes your system run like it's trying to reject heat into 130-degree air. The compressor works overtime against sky-high head pressure. Solution: A professional coil cleaning restores proper airflow and drops those pressures back to normal. Where We Come In: Next time we service your system, ask us to show you how we clean the coils. We'll walk you through it right there on your property. Second, Short Cycling. Problem: Your AC turns on and off every few minutes instead of running longer, steady cycles. With a TXV-equipped system, pressures can take three to five minutes to equalize after shutdown. If the thermostat calls for cooling again before that window closes, the compressor restarts against unequal pressure—like trying to start your car on a hill. It draws locked rotor amps, four to seven times higher than normal running amps, and overheats fast. Solution: Check and replace failing capacitors, which help the motors start smoothly. Where We Come In: We test your capacitors during service and replace them before they cause a compressor failure. Third, Low Refrigerant. Problem: Refrigerant vapor returning to the compressor is typically 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. That cool flow is what keeps the motor windings and oil from overheating inside the compressor shell. When you're low on refrigerant, there's not enough mass moving through the system to carry that heat away. The compressor runs hot and eventually fails. Solution: Refill the system and add a modern sealant. These sealants are often very effective for small to moderate leaks and are the easiest, most cost-effective option for most homeowners. Where We Come In: We check your refrigerant levels, top it off, and add the proper sealant to get your system running reliably again. Closing: The good news? All three of these problems are preventable with regular maintenance. Don't wait for the next heat wave to find out which one has been quietly wearing down your system.
