My Favorite Older Furnace / AC, the Trane/ American Standard Package Unit.

If I were to pick one Furnace/ Air Conditioner that seems to be built the best it would be the Trane/ American Standard package unit. I can't think of the last time I came across one that was not working and I had to deem it beyond repair. These units are extremely reliable and serviceable. One thing I find extremely annoying as a technician is when air conditioner evaporator coils are hard

to get access to. This units evaporator coil is extremely easy to service and clean. Everything on this unit is easy to service. Many of these units I service are 20 + years old and still working great. Many times I’ll work on one of these units that is 20 years old and its the first time It’s stopped working. And 90% of the time I have it working again within a couple hours or so.

Bottom line is if you see one of these units on your roof keep it running for as long as possible. For the most part I only recommend replacing a system like this if you have an unmanageable refrigerant leak, which means a sealant hasn’t resolved a small leak. Or if you have compressor failure, which is rare. I typically never recommend replacing a unit just because it's old. Keep in mind my AC is 40 years old as of 2021. Like grandpa used to say If it isn't broke don't fix it and if you can fix it don't replace it.

I know it can be enraging when the furnace or A/C stops working but stay calm. Here are some tips on what to check if the furnace stops blowing warm air.
