The Last days of Socrates is the one book I would recommend everyone read.

This book was given to me by a friend about ten years ago. I'm not a big reader so it sat on a bookshelf for nine years or so until I decided to give it a look over. I started to read it this year and then downloaded the audiobook version so I could listen to it on my daily bike ride. I immediately understood why Socrates is a name that most of us are familiar with. The concepts that he discusses in the book

are powerful and timeless. Here are some of Socrates' quotes I really enjoy. One concept he discussed with a fellow man before being put to death was that they will look at you as an enemy of the state not because you speak your mind freely but when you convince others to think and speak like you. That's essentially why they killed Socrates, he was getting people to ask questions and revealing that those who had all of the answers actually knew nothing at all.

"The fewer our wants the more we resemble the Gods."

"The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing."

"I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing."

"There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance."

"Are you not ashamed of heaping up the greatest amount of money and honor and reputation, and caring so little about wisdom and truth and the greatest improvement of the soul?"

"We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light."

"Falling down is not a failure. Failure comes when you stay where you have fallen."

"There are two kinds of disease of the soul, vice and ignorance."

"The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less."

"Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people."

"Smart people learn from everything and everyone, average people from their experiences, stupid people already have all the answers."

"To fear death, my friends, is only to think ourselves wise, without being wise: for it is to think that we know what we do not know. For anything that men can tell, death may be the greatest good that can happen to them: but they fear it as if they knew quite well that it was the greatest of evils. And what is this but that shameful ignorance of thinking that we know what we do not know?"

When you're AC or Furnace breaks down look at it as a test from God/ the Universe. Do you have the patience to calmly wait for it to be serviced? Can you see the upside of it breaking down? Maybe you and your family are stronger than you think and enduring being hot or cold is exactly what you need.
