Tales from a Tech, So I walked into the wrong house.

I’ve been fixing doing furnace repair and air conditioner repairs in the greater Sacramento area now since 2008 and for the most part my job is pretty routine. But every once and a while I have a day that doesn't go as planned. This occurrence happened in 2010 in Roseville California. I was doing a repair for a furnace in a townhome. Townhomes often have no separation between them on the sides and oftentimes look very similar. I had parked in the street in front of where two of the townhomes met with each other. My customer was a nice lady and lived by herself. So after evaluating what was wrong with the furnace I found it was a failed hot surface Ignitor and went out to my van to grab the needed part to do the repairs.

So I walked back into the home but something was off and where did the baby come from? I'm now standing in the front entryway with the door closed behind me. And then the bathroom door opens and a lady walks out. She had a towel wrapped around her and had just finished taking a shower. I was in the wrong house! I had walked into my customer's neighbor's house by mistake. Once I realized what had happened I apologized to the neighbor and she was surprisingly calm and nice about the whole mix up. So I promptly got out of the house and back to where I belonged.

Lesson learned: I guess this is just another reason to lock your doors. Someone might accidentally walk into your house. I doubt this will ever happen again and looking back on it I’m glad she wasn’t looking for a reason to test out her new shotgun.

I know it can be enraging when the furnace or A/C stops working but stay calm. Here are some tips on what to check if the furnace stops blowing warm air.
